What Is Marriage?

Marriage is a “hot topic” right now in the media and the blog world due to Proposition 8 in California. Emotions are running high. There is much being said regarding this topic, combined with intensive personal investments of energy, money, time and effort. Some reports are staying neutral and open-minded, but often the tone becomes bitter, negative, and contentious. This saddens me, and I encourage my readers not to participate in spiteful conversations. Please take the high road. Or, as Elder Robert D. Hales so beautifully instructed in his recent Conference Talk – show your love and discipleship by practicing Christian Courage. I give fair warning that this site is a “contention free zone“. I invite anyone who prefers a war of words and intolerance to go elsewhere. However, I hope that the rest of you will stay, read, share your thoughts and participate in gaining better understanding and respect.

It is not my wish to add another “Proposition 8 Battle-Cry” to the pile. Instead, I would like to devote this post to the core issue in question:

Marriage.

Books that guide my life

For the past week I have been taking the “Hinckley Challenge” to read The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ in 97 days. So far, I’m ahead of schedule! I have read The Book of Mormon many times in my life. My mother would tell her children scripture stories from the time we were born. At night before bedtime she would gather us together and read from the Bible or The Book of Mormon. She would share her feelings about the scriptures as she sat on my bed tucking me in for the night. She would listen to my troubles and worries and often say “This reminds me of the story of Nephi..”, or “Do you remember the story of David and Goliath?..”, or “How did Jesus treat people who made fun of him?..”, or “Esther had to be very brave just like that”…and then we would talk about those stories and what we can learn from them.

Baby MoSop in Mom's Rocking Chair

I remember my mother holding me on her lap as we sat in her large rocking chair and listening to her tell me stories about her life, and her faith. These were special times, and I treasure them. Mother planted the seeds of the Gospel deep into my heart. For many years my mother was Continue reading

LDS (Mormon) Temple Update

Temple growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has flourished over the past few months. The church newsroom has just released a video World Report (attached) regarding the most recent activity of temple dedication, construction and groundbreaking ceremonies. This is a very exciting time of growth for the church. These beautiful temples represent sacrifice and faith, and are a great blessing to the members of the church who reside nearby and will be attending them. The temples are also a great blessing to the countries and cities in which they have been built as a symbol of peace. The beautiful gardens are open to the public to stroll and for quiet meditation. Prior to each dedication ceremony an open house is held, and all are welcome to tour and enjoy the beautiful edifice, ask questions and learn more about Latter-day Saints. After the dedication ceremony, entering a temple is reserved for those members of the church who are in good standing and meet certain requirements. Sometimes those not of our faith misunderstand the purpose of these buildings. The temples are not used for our regular Sunday worship service. We have chapels for that purpose, and anyone is invited to enter and attend meetings weekly. However, the temples are very sacred buildings set apart as a place where special ceremonies such as eternal marriage takes place, and baptism and other religious work is performed for deceased ancestors. To learn more about the purpose of the LDS temples you may read a nice summary HERE, or watch an in-depth documentary HERE.

LDS General Conference

Fall is in the air, and that means it’s time for Conference!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds two large General Conferences per year. These are held during the first weekends of April and October each year. Over the course of two days there will be 5 two-hour sessions. The first session begins Saturday October 4th at 10:00 am Mountain Time. Check out the Time Zone Countdown.

All of my life, I have been filled with anticipation and excitement for Conference. When I was younger, it meant that I could sleep a little later on Sunday morning, and watch church on TV in my pajamas. :)

As I got older it took on a much more meaningful and sacred significance.

The beautiful messages of the prophet and apostles often seem directed right to me personally. I receive guidance for my own personal struggles or worries. Most importantly, each special weekend fills up my ‘spiritual batteries’, and gives me a renewed strength to face the struggles of life.

The Choir

This weekend is going to be especially significant for me personally, as I will have the tremendous responsibility and privilege to sing in three of the five sessions. I will also be performing Music and the Spoken Word on Sunday Morning (9:30 am Mountain Time). All of the music for this Conference was carefully and lovingly chosen. I am anxious to share these beautiful songs with the world. I approach this assignment prayerfully. I hope that this gift of music will touch each soul, and help all who listen feel closer to our Savior Jesus Christ, and to heaven.

SLC Temple Square

Although each General Conference is organized for the members of the LDS faith, it is not limited to members alone! All the world is invited and encouraged to join. You may attend a live session on Temple Square, listen by radio, watch on local or satellite television, and anyone throughout the whole world with internet access can view through online streaming! Each session is offered in MANY languages! Please check the links I have included throughout this post to find what works best for you. These are wonders and marvels of our modern age! What a gift. Go to THIS WEBPAGE for all viewing and streaming information.

I invite you to come, and listen to a living prophet’s voice this weekend! Hear the beautiful music and messages of peace, and find spiritual renewal.

Join The Hinckley Challenge

President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910-2008)

President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910-2008)

Today is October 1st, and it’s your opportunity to join in a new online “Hinckley Challenge“! The Challenge website was designed in honor of an historic challenge that President Gordon B. Hinckley gave the world in August 2005 to read the Book of Mormon before the end of the year. Each Hinckley Challenge is now designed with a 97-day finish line in honor of President Hinckley’s 97 years of life. (but one is definitely welcome to reach the finish line early)

The Book of Mormon has Continue reading
