Joseph Smith and The Restoration

9 Jun

Joseph Smith, chosen prophet

Joseph Smith, chosen prophet

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the divine priesthood authority to act in His name was lost from the earth through an apostacy, which then needed to be restored. This Restoration happened in 1820 through a latter-day prophet chosen by Jesus Christ, named Joseph Smith. The following video is an illustrated excerpt of a talk entitled “How Choice A Seer” by the late LDS apostle Elder Neal A. Maxwell, discussing this Restoration.

LDS Apostle Song Welcomes Andersen

8 Apr

A catchy tune called “The Apostle Song” has been getting a lot of attention today. Recently updated by “The Sons of Ammon” (creators of a popular Seminary Scripture Mastery series), lyrics now include the newest LDS Apostle.

On April 5th, 2009, during the 179th Semi-Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Elder Neil L. Andersen was sustained by the general membership of the church. Andersen, 57, was born in Logan, Utah but raised in Pocatello. He fills the vacancy left in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles by the death of Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin in December 2008. Elder Andersen was a senior member of the Presidency of the Seventy prior to this announcement. He was appointed as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in April of 1993.

Enjoy this catchy little melody that outlines the new LDS Church Leadership:

LDS (Mormon) Temple Update

7 Oct

Temple growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has flourished over the past few months. The church newsroom has just released a video World Report (attached) regarding the most recent activity of temple dedication, construction and groundbreaking ceremonies. This is a very exciting time of growth for the church. These beautiful temples represent sacrifice and faith, and are a great blessing to the members of the church who reside nearby and will be attending them. The temples are also a great blessing to the countries and cities in which they have been built as a symbol of peace. The beautiful gardens are open to the public to stroll and for quiet meditation. Prior to each dedication ceremony an open house is held, and all are welcome to tour and enjoy the beautiful edifice, ask questions and learn more about Latter-day Saints. After the dedication ceremony, entering a temple is reserved for those members of the church who are in good standing and meet certain requirements. Sometimes those not of our faith misunderstand the purpose of these buildings. The temples are not used for our regular Sunday worship service. We have chapels for that purpose, and anyone is invited to enter and attend meetings weekly. However, the temples are very sacred buildings set apart as a place where special ceremonies such as eternal marriage takes place, and baptism and other religious work is performed for deceased ancestors. To learn more about the purpose of the LDS temples you may read a nice summary HERE, or watch an in-depth documentary HERE.

Cameroon LDS Temple Trip 2005

Cameroon LDS Temple Trip 2005

Two weeks later an excited and courageous group of Latter-day Saints from Cameroon boarded two mini-buses and headed to Nigeria to receive the sacred blessings contained in a temple of the Lord. The two branches of the Church in Cameroon are Douala and Yaounde. Members from both branches were included in this trip.

As the crow flies, Aba is only about 175 miles west of Douala. Douala is 125 miles west of Yaounde. However, the roads from Douala to Aba are not direct, nor are they paved. Accompanied by a local missionary couple, (more…)

Who are the Mormons?

6 Jun

I have been seeing a large amount of similar questions cropping up all over the world wide web. You find them on Blogs, chat-rooms, answer sites, information networks and commentary trails on any given day: “Who are the Mormons?” “Do you know any Mormons?” “How many Mormons are there?” “Where do Mormons live?” “What do Mormons believe?”…..and so forth.

As a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a “Mormon”, I am always happy to answer these questions, share my beliefs or to offer clarification. I am pleased to share a fresh voice here who has done a lovely job addressing the “Mormon Questions”. I send kudos to this anonymous Scotsman for his creative video. Enjoy!

My Song In The Night

26 Apr

Dr. Mack Wilberg has written a new arrangement of the American Folk Hymn entitled “My Song in the Night” which is hauntingly beautiful. I have tried to do some research online regarding its origin and history, and came up a bit empty-handed. However, the text to this hymn is particularly haunting. The words invoke an attitude of deep personal pleading:

One Mormon View of Polygamy

17 Apr

Due to the recent events in Texas there has been an outpouring of media attention, articles, and blog posts on the subject of polygamy. It certainly is a blessing to exercise the divine gift of free expression! However, it is unfortunate that many have chosen to do so to stir up anger and promote intolerance.

During this recent outcry, some have become subjected to confusing and inaccurate information regarding the “Mormons” – members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The “Polygamy Question” has always been one I cringe at. It is not a comfortable subject, and certainly not when there are so many other positive and beautiful things about the Church and the world in general to discuss. There are also painful memories of misunderstanding and violent persecution in Mormon church history regarding polygamy and I suppose this triggers a natural “fight or flight” response in us whenever the topic surfaces. A Child of God

6 Mar

I am a Child of God, and He has Sent me Here,
Has given me an earthly home,
with parents Kind and Dear” Hymn 301

One of the most important core beliefs of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that each human being is a child of God. We lived as a spirit son or daughter with our Heavenly Father before this life, and we will return to live with Him after this life. (more…)
