Pornography Addiction: Movie Offers Hope

A compelling documentary has been created entitled “Pornography: Confronting the Addiction“.

Director Brandon Kowallis

This 35-minute film began as the Masters thesis project of up-and-coming director Brandon Kowallis, a graduate of both National University, and BYU. Awhile back, I had the opportunity to attend a screening at my local library, and came away inspired. Director Kowallis was on hand to introduce the film, and moderated a question and answer session following the screening along with Continue reading

A New Day For Happy Thoughts

In my last post rant, I’m afraid I came across quite a bit cranky and less than patriotic. That was not my intention. OK. I admit I was cranky. But I want to reassure you that I still love my country very much, I am eager to see good things come from our new administration (there is always hope), and contrary to my attitude problem, I do not believe we have reached doomsday.

Therefore, I apologize for the downer post.

Don't Drive Angry

As penance, this morning I awoke with a scene from one of my favorite movies GroundHog Day running through my mind (over, and over, and over…).

I was replaying the moment when the character of Phil Conners (actor Bill Murray) has kidnapped the town groundhog and is speeding down the road in a stolen truck with the police in hot pursuit.

Bill sardonically lectures the groundhog: “Don’t Drive Angry! Don’t Drive Angry!” I got the message, and said to myself:

MoSop, Don’t Blog Angry! Don’t Blog Angry!

Therefore, today I give thanks for the wisdom of the groundhog. ;) There’s no use in letting ourselves get frustrated on the road of life. I know this. It is actually one of my oft repeated mantras here at the site. A theme, if you will. In the end, we are all going to end up at the same destination (well, at least initially), box-happy-thoughtsso we might as well travel with grace.

I have resolved to think happier thoughts. To the left I have provided a “happy box”. To start things off, I will add a couple. Then, I invite you to please add some of your own via the comments. Don’t hold back. (We can always get another box if we fill this one). I think we could all do with some happy thoughts right now. Don’t you?

#1. Wisdom from Pooh Corner:

To Tom Hanks: From An American Mormon Fan

Dear Tom,

What were you thinking?! You must have been temporarily impaired. It could happen. After all, you were having such a good time celebrating your recent “Big Love” Executive Producer success, maybe it was just too easy to lose track of the refills. Alcohol does that to people. Open mouth – drink booze – insert foot.

I’d like to offer some sort of excuse for you, because quite frankly your latest comments calling Mormon’s “un-American” seem awfully out of character. Of course, Continue reading

"Muk" - From left; Trevor Wright, A. Todd Smith, Jordan Augustine, Joseph Peterson On the brink of embarking to Cambodia for a major documentary film shoot, BYU students Trevor Wright, A. Todd Smith, Jordan Augustine and Joseph Peterson still managed to brainstorm additional creative projects. Their boundless talent branched into the realm of music. Todd describes the birth of their band as follows:

“Honestly, the band started as a joke. Last year the four of us were in Hong Kong attending a wedding and sight seeing. We got a picture taken there with the four of us together and looked at the photo later and decided that it would make a cool CD cover for some kind of boy band. That’s when Joseph threw out the idea of having a Cambodian band because we all knew how to play instruments in high school. At first we just laughed, but about 8 months or so later I emailed the manager of the biggest TV station in Cambodia asking if we could play, just to see if they would show any interest whatsoever. Immediately the manager e-mailed me back asking for a video of us performing”

Part 1: Talented American Mormons Help Cambodia

This is the first installment in a special 3-part series exclusive!

A new rock band called “Muk” is capturing the hearts of Cambodians everywhere, and experiencing unexpected fame. What makes this unique, is that each member of the musical group are four average, white Mormon boys from Utah and New Jersey. It is the story “behind the band”, however, which is most unexpected, rewarding and inspiring.

MormonSoprano recently caught up with one of those band members, Brigham Young University film student A. Todd Smith, who agreed to an exclusive interview, along with graciously sharing personal photos.

Mormon Temple Study

Many are curious about the Mormon Temples. There are questions regarding the origins, theology, ceremonies and rituals. Questions such as “Can I go inside of a Mormon Temple?”, “What are Mormon weddings like?”, “Is it true Mormons baptize for the dead?”, or “What is the purpose of a Mormon Temple?” all regularly surface on the internet. Although members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are eager to answer questions and clarify misconceptions, it is a broad subject which often cannot be fully covered nor satisfied in a brief conversation.
