The Resurrected Christ

In April 1972 Elder Bruce R. McConkie, an apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shared a personal poem he had written as part of his general conference address.

The poem is a definitive testimony of Jesus Christ. The verses attracted overwhelming attention and immediate love. They were first set into an anthem by Latter-day Saint composer Rhea B. Allen. However, a simpler setting was written by Tabernacle organist John Longhurst for the 1985 LDS hymnbook edition. (more…)

“Eventually we must have our own strong and deeply placed foundation, or we will be unable to withstand the storms of life, which will come…How, you may ask, can we most effectively gain and maintain the foundation needed to survive spiritually in the world in which we live?…First, prayer…Second, study the scriptures and “meditate therein day and night”…and Third, be involved in the Lord’s service…”

The hymn “How Firm A Foundation” has been a popular favorite among Christians ever since it first appeared, in 1787. It was brought to America by Dr. John Rippon, a Baptist minister from London. When it appeared in Rippon’s collection ‘A Selection of Hymns,’ (1790) the poem’s author was signed simply as “K” followed by a dash. There has been speculation this stands for (more…)

My Song In The Night

Dr. Mack Wilberg has written a new arrangement of the American Folk Hymn entitled “My Song in the Night” which is hauntingly beautiful. I have tried to do some research online regarding its origin and history, and came up a bit empty-handed. However, the text to this hymn is particularly haunting. The words invoke an attitude of deep personal pleading:

Over my life as a regular “journaler” I have found it is often the case that when I have been particularly busy, I find it difficult to find time to “write it all down”.
