5 New Mormon Temples include Roman Surprise

LDS General Conference Saturday Oct 4, 2008

During the opening morning session of today’s General Conference President Thomas S. Monson surprised the world-wide church with the announcement of five new temples to be built!

1. Calgary, Canada

2. Cordoba, Argentina

3. Philadelphia, PA

4. Kansas City, MO

and then none other than…drumroll please…

rome-italy5. Rome, Italy!

Not since April of 2000 have so many temples been announced together. When Pres. Monson said one would be built in Rome, there was a huge gasp of surprise and excitement which shot through the crowd, causing President Monson to pause, chuckle a little at the reaction, and give a winning smile.

We are so thrilled for all five of these locations. What a blessing for our Saints!

My husband and I will have to hold onto our dearest hope for Paris (he served his mission in France). We hoped it was a little “sign” when daily direct flights between SLC to Paris opened this year. Nope. The Lord likes to keep us in suspense on that one. Hopefully it will be in our lifetime. Meanwhile, perhaps Delta will consider opening direct flights to Rome! 🙂

I certainly can’t think of a more exciting way to begin a Conference!

  1. After he announced that, I thought, “Wow! That’s like announcing you’re going to build a temple in…”. And then I couldn’t think of anything. Basically, it’s like announcing you’re going to build a temple in Rome. What could top that? (Maybe Jerusalem. Or Jackson County, MO. But those ones have already been announced. We’re just waiting on the details).

  2. Does everyone else know something I don’t know? I’ve heard no comments about the “greater Kansas City area” temple. After all, the “greater Kansas City area” includes a town called Independence…. hmmm…

  3. This is such great news! A Canadian living in Utah, it’s wonderful to see another temple scheduled for Canada. The Vancouver temple is half way done and will be dedicated in time for the 2010 Olympics to be held there. Thanks for sharing.

etigg – you post a good question! I don’t know the answer, however according to lds.org “More details concerning architectural design and the exact location of the temple will be announced as they are available.” (i.e. Stay Tuned)

    Raymond – very cool!

Daniel – thanks for reading and leaving a comment

Sarah&Tim, I agree, it is very exciting to see the spread of temples in Canada! I think this makes #8, right?
